AGRICULTURE AND AGRIBUSINESS Growing rural incomes by linking producers to markets, and leveraging technological and institutional change to boost productivity in an environmentally sustainable way. More than 290 million people in sub-Saharan Africa live on less than $1 a day and the number is increasing. The causes of poverty are complex and often superficially understood, but the agribusiness sector remains the primary income source for most people in Africa. To achieve lasting improvements in people's quality of life, moving from subsistence to commercial farm production is a viable option. ECIAfrica builds agricultural enterprises and links producers to commercial markets, both local and overseas. Since 1994, our team has investigated more than 20 different agri-business sub-sectors in eight countries, and designed growth strategies to boost production and income. Our interventions are based on rigorous analysis of agricultural and trade policies, and specific sub-sector and value-chain studies. Some specific services we provide include:
